About the Item

This classic late 19th-century American crib quilt is a striking example of the textile artistry of the time, balancing traditional piecework with a bold, graphic sensibility. Until about the 1920s, baby or crib quilts were typically just scaled down versions of adult quilts and the log cabin pattern was a popular choice, in this case the Fields and Furrows variation of the Log Cabin design. As was the tradition, the heart of each block is a vibrant, solid red center square—the symbol of the hearth of the home. The quilt contains a beautiful combination of Victorian-era cottons, including crisp pink-and-white ginghams, intricate calicos, deep indigo blues, rich madder-toned chocolate browns, and delicate shirting prints. The reverse features an earth-toned geometric repeating cotton print, while the binding is a tiny floral cotton print that has been handstitched to both sides. The quilt has been foundation pieced onto muslin or cotton which appears to be the only "batting" in the quilt. It is a lightweight quilt.
