About the Item

This exceptional Pennsylvania Amish Nine Patch quilt, dating to approximately 1915–1920, is a striking example of the craftsmanship of Amish quilts that have made them among the most sought-after forms of American folk art. Set on point, the classic Nine Patch blocks are pieced from slate blue-gray cotton with vivid accents of coral red, mint green, lavender, pale pink, mustard, and light blue. Large olive-green setting squares provide a contrast while the exceptional hand quilting demonstrates the work of a highly accomplished quilter with the sweeping and complex feathers along the four-sided border and feather wreaths between the nine-patch blocks. The back is a slate blue cotton while the binding is dark grey cotton that has been handstitched to both sides. The cotton batting is lightweight.
