About the Item

This is a beautiful and rare example of American Depression-era folk art - a hand-appliquéd crib quilt beautifully capturing with great detail a trip to the circus and a ride on a carousel. Dating to the 1930s, the quilt centers on a colorful merry-go-round with three happy children riding scarousel horses beneath a striped canopy topped with a waving red pennant. The appliqué is extremely detailed down to tiny hair ribbons and the itty-bitty beanie ball on top of the monkey's hat. The monkey is one of the circus characters at the corners of the quilt that also include a balancing bear, a circus elephant perched atop a ball, and a smiling ticket seller peeking from the ticket booth. Bright red and blue polka-dot horses with cheerful yellow manes and tails, candy-striped appliqué rails, and the striking red-and-white striped binding combine to create a quilt that is an impressive piece of folk art. The hand quilting is also impressive, with scrolling feather motifs, elaborate braided rope patterns along the border and finely stitched crosshatch grids. The back is white cotton while the binding is a red and white candy cane stripe that has been machine stitched to the front and handstitched to the back. The cotton batting is lightweight. This exceptional 19th-century Pennsylvania Dutch appliqué quilt, meticulously hand-stitched in the mid-1800s, stands as a rare and museum-quality example of early American textile artistry. Created entirely by hand from individually cut and sewn fabric elements, the quilt reflects the extraordinary craftsmanship, patience, and devotion characteristic of the finest 19th-century domestic needlework traditions. The composition features a refined floral appliqué pattern with four large-scale circular and leaf motifs rendered in soft pale blue and rich red tones, elegantly set against a luminous ivory ground. A finely executed sawtooth border frames the design, adding both visual structure and architectural balance to the overall composition.
