About the Item

This extraordinary pictorial quilt depicts images that are both fierce and friendly. On the bottom are hounds chasing stags while on the top is a tree of life surrounded by birds, one of which may be a dove. It's a shame not to be able to speak with the quilt maker to learn more of her intent but perhaps it is a metaphor for both the danger and kindness of life. Or am I reading too much into it? The quilt is from Pennsylvania; circa 1870s. Measurements are 77" x 78.".

Located in Darnestown, MD

Finely crafted Feathered Stars quilt made more unusual with the pieced Bars alternating blocks. The quilt is in unwashed, excellent condition. It is quilted with chevrons throughout. There are some tiny, tiny brown specks in the double pink calico fabric. As the quilt appears to be in unused condition, they may have been present when the quilt was pieced. Sewn to the back is a label that says: Feathered Star Made by Lois Smith's Great Grandmother Charlotte Robinson and her sister Mary Hill circa 1875-85 at Smiths Mills, New York (near Silver Creek...

Vintage Batik Wall Art, Hand Painted Indonesian Textile

Vintage Batik Wall Art, Hand Painted Indonesian Textile

Located in Barrington, IL

Vintage Asian Batik hand painted fabric art. The beautiful batik is a collection of various scenes of human figures and animals set on a red fabric with designs in blue and black. The batik is a wonderful example of a hand painted wall art. Batik is one of many methodologies of fabric art in a long and rich folk textile tradition around the world. It is a wax-resist type of dyeing operation where certain sections of a textile are pigmented while others are tied-off and shielded from coloring. Batik designs are created in various geometric motifs that have certain symbolism and convey status within society, but now too they use batik methods to achieve what in essence are paintings on fabric. Dimensions: 26” x 32” Date of Manufacture: 3rd Quarter of the 1900s Place of Origin: Indonesia Material: Textile Condition: Wear consistent with age and use The Persian Knot Gallery, SKU: 2262 Vintage Batik Painting...
