About the Item

This expressive folk sculpture depicts San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers, shown guiding a pair of oxen as they plow the land. San Isidro is represented in traditional rural attire, standing calmly behind the animals with arms slightly extended, conveying protection, humility, and divine stewardship over agricultural labor. Carved in a distinctly primitive Guatemalan style, the figure group is richly painted in hand-applied polychromy, with earthy greens, browns, and creams that emphasize its rural subject matter. The oxen, individually rendered with expressive faces and curved horns, anchor the composition and reinforce the saint’s role as protector of the fields and harvest. The sculpture retains original polychrome with visible paint loss, surface wear, and patina, consistent with age and devotional use. These areas of wear enhance the authenticity and folk character of the piece. Mounted on its original integral base. A compelling example of 19th-century Guatemalan religious folk art, reflecting the deep connection between faith, agrarian life, and local artistic tradition.
