About the Item

Royal House Antiques Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this exquisite original Inuit Soapstone Carving of a Hunter with two Seals made by Joanassie Smith (1925-1963) that has the period name and serial number to the base The Hunter with two otters, E9-1379 is by Joanassie Smith (1925-1963), from Povungnituk/Puvirnituq this is probably the earliest carving I have, Joanassie Smith has various carvings in public collections. In 1999 settlements in Canada were able to reclaim their Inuit names. And Povungnituk is now called Puvirnituq. It seems that some names were more Anglised that others in the nineteenth century, e.g. Resolute Bay The first number and letter describe the area where the artist lives. E is for Eastern Canada for example, which was divided into 9 regions and E9 is the Eastern side of Hudson Bay The next four numbers (and this does vary on carvings, sometimes there are 3 & 4 digits, I have seen carvings with 6 digits) These numbers are called disc numbers. They are a personal number allocated to an indigenous person from the 1940’s through to the 1970. Fibre discs were worn around the neck, hence they were called disc numbers. In 1971 a project surname was allocated first and last to Inuit people replacing disc numbers. The numbers which follow the region will place an individual in a settlement along the East coast of Hudson Bay The condition is for this piece is wonderfully patinated, I can’t see anything you wouldn’t expect from something this age and as well travelled Dimensions Height:- 18cm Width:- 13.5cm Depth:- 5cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask Any questions please feel free to ask before you bid Condition Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.

Canadian Inuit Soapstone Figure of a Woman Making a Kamik by Lydia Anautak Qumak

Canadian Inuit Soapstone Figure of a Woman Making a Kamik by Lydia Anautak Qumak

Located in Nottingham, GB

A beautifully hand-carved Canadian Inuit stone sculpture by renowned Nunavik artist Lydia Anautak Qumak, depicting a seated woman carefully making a traditional kamik—the waterproof skin boot that has been an essential part of Inuit life for generations. The composition captures a quiet domestic moment with warmth and authenticity, celebrating the craftsmanship, resilience, and cultural traditions of Inuit communities. Qumak's confident carving emphasises expressive form and subtle detail, giving the figure both character and a strong sense of movement while retaining the simplicity that defines classic Inuit sculpture. Executed in finely polished stone with attractive natural colour variations and texture, the sculpture is signed "Lydia" to the underside. It is an excellent example of late 20th-century Inuit art, combining cultural significance with timeless sculptural appeal. A highly collectible work that would make a wonderful addition to a collection of Canadian Inuit art...
