About the Item

A powerful biblical relief carving showing Judith with the head of Holofernes, worked in what appears to be limewood (linden) with a warm, waxed brown surface. The scene is set within an oval medallion framed by a deeply carved foliate oval border, flanked by scrolling ends and geometric detailing. Draped figures, a tented canopy and trees are rendered in relief with confident toolwork and lively folds typical of late Baroque taste. The scale and shaped outline suggest the panel was originally part of a larger furnishing, likely an architectural or devotional element, perhaps an altarpiece surround or a bed headboard. The subject, long popular in Continental workshops, points to a probable French origin, 18th century, with a possibility of earlier roots. Condition: age-related wear with scattered small losses to high points and edges, minor shrinkage cracks and surface marks consistent with an old, stable panel. An impressive, one-off statement piece for a wall, stair hall or above a fireplace, equally at home in collections of religious art, Baroque sculpture or historic interiors. Judith with the Head of Holofernes depicts the biblical heroine Judith who, according to tradition, infiltrated the camp of the Assyrian general Holofernes, commander under King Nebuchadnezzar, more likely a Babylonian king in historical terms, and beheaded him while he slept after gaining his trust and seducing him. A popular subject in Renaissance and Baroque art, it is widely interpreted as an allegory of courage, virtue, and divine justice triumphing over tyranny and oppression.
