About the Item

c. 1910s/1920s; Bookhout Funeral Home - Oneonta, NY Large hand-carved wooden trade sign for the Bookhout Funeral Home, featuring deeply incised, gold-painted lettering on a black field. The surface bears a timeworn patina consistent with decades of outdoor display, and the serif letterforms are executed in an elegant, slightly condensed style typical of early 20th-century signwork. Gilded highlights catch the light against the matte black background, giving the piece a quiet formality in keeping with its original purpose. Bookhout Funeral Home traces its origins to the 1910s, serving the Oneonta region of New York and operating continuously into the modern day.
