About the Item

A rare hanging British "Crown and Anchor" pub or tavern sign constructed out of iron and wood. The sign is crafted with a forged iron frame having two hanging loops. The sign features a substantial cast iron anchor and crown inside above a weathered painted wooden panel. The anchor sits diagonally within the frame with a long shank, a large ring on the shackle, broad flukes extending outside of the frame, and a protruding handle on the stock. The crown is suspended from the top of the frame, and is accented with three tipped finials and a base having a bold diamond lattice relief pattern. The bottom wood plank has been heavily patinated from age and exposure, and retains some faded paint. The piece is likely from an British pub or tavern, as the name "Crown and Anchor" is one of the most recognizable English pub names, symbolizing the Royal Navy's loyalty to the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. Beautifully aged authentic patina throughout the sign as seen in photos. The rustic piece is well suited for use as a bold decorative display piece on a wall, bar, or above a fireplace mantle. From an estate in Marin County, CA.

This rare and large American scrollwork bannerette weathervane recalls those produced by Jonathan Howard & Co. of West Bridgewater, MA. Further academic research may confirm or deny this possibility and an origin with J.W. Fiske & Co. of New York, shouldn’t be ruled out. Alternatively, this weathervane may also be an entirely independent work from the first half of the 19th century, steeped in the early genesis of weathervanes as an American folk art.
