About the Item

This early 20th-century Zulu iwisa, commonly known as a knobkerrie, is carved from a single piece of dense hardwood, with the natural root or burl cleverly incorporated to create the heavy rounded head. By exploiting the tree's natural form, the maker produced a durable and well-balanced weapon capable of delivering considerable force while remaining resilient in use. The iwisa served a variety of purposes within Zulu society. It was employed for hunting, personal defence and as a throwing weapon, while also being carried as an everyday companion and symbol of manhood. The drilled butt originally accommodated a carrying thong, allowing the club to be worn or suspended when not in use. Its restrained form reflects a practical object designed for reliability rather than ornament, with the uninterrupted grain of the hardwood ensuring exceptional strength between shaft and head.
