About the Item

An impressive French five-light chandelier dating to the early 20th century, combining substantial brass and bronze construction with an elegant suite of hand-moulded opaline glass shades. The chandelier is centred around a large, highly ornamental globular loom chamber with a broad circular stage decorated with twisted-rope detailing and terminating in a prominent solid cast-brass finial. Five graceful gooseneck arms extend from the central body, each supporting a suspended swing gallery through a rectangular solid-brass link. Each gallery retains its original bronze and brass B22 bayonet-fit bulb holder and supports an original French hand-moulded opaline glass shade. The bell-shaped shades feature deeply moulded draped decoration and dramatically scalloped edges, producing a particularly attractive diffused light when illuminated. Above, an elaborate multi-stage central column rises to a stylized decorative grab ring and original bronze inter-link suspension chain. The fixture is completed by its original hexagonal ceiling rose and hanging fitment. Professionally serviced and rewired with period-appropriate three-core fabric-braided cable, the chandelier has been earthed and tested and is in working order.
