Antique Gilded Brass Chandelier with Grotesque Masks – Neo-Baroque / Neo-Renaissance – 19th / Early 20th Century Description: A rare and imposing antique chandelier in neo-Baroque / Neo-Renaissance style, made of gilded brass. The most striking feature of this chandelier are the grotesque masks with horns, which adorn the bottom of the bowl. These masks are probably inspired by satyrs or fauns, mythical creatures from Greek and Roman antiquity. In classical art, satyrs were associated with nature, freedom, lust and the god Dionysus (Bacchus), while in Baroque and Neo-Renaissance art they were often used as protective and decorative elements. The expressive faces, detailed horns and playful shapes give this chandelier a unique and powerful character.
