About the Item

The first five Artichoke ceiling lights were commissioned in 1957 from Poul Henningsen by architects Eva and Nils Koppel for use in the Langelinie Pavilion restaurant in Copenhagen. They are not for sale, they still hang there today. In the early 1960's after much praise and popular demand Louis Poulsen started to produce the PH Artichoke for the market. This Artichoke lamp here is such early 1960's example. It was almost exactly made like the Langelinie lamps, two screw configuration on the upper skirt (picture), the one wire suspension (that later changed to a 3 wire suspension). For better handling they added two riveted 'flippable' handles to carry the lamp (later in the 60's came the steady RVS handles). The 5 Langelinie lamps have no handles. The Langelinie lamps also had no canopy/ceilingplate. This lamp offered here also had no canopy. The previous owner ordered one which can be seen on the pictures. Original Poulsen, but this model used none. Just like the Langelinie lamps (see picture). Purist will hang the lamp without the canopy. I believe this is the earliest model that is offered on 1stDibs at this moment. Surf the internet for an equal example and you will probably be disappointed. The lamp is in a very good condition. Some patina on the leaves as is clearly visible. I noticed, when filming, that 2 leaves have some smudge. Not visible. I do not know if this is dirt or patina. For me not worth mentioning for a lamp of this age, but it's just that it has been said (video). The lamp is formidable. The pictures & video give a good idea of this early and hard to find PH Artichoke by Poul Hennigsen. If you are looking for 'the real McCoy' this is the one you are looking for. It ticks all the boxes: -Right early age for stable value (first riveted handles & one wire suspension). -Right patina, only available by age. -Most sought after size Ø72 PH Artichoke Sizes (4) and Recommended Spaces PH Artichoke 48 (Ø 48 cm / 18.9 inches): Best for: Intimate spaces, small dining rooms, cozy corners, or bedrooms.
