About the Item

A romantic and highly decorative vintage Italian gilt tole chandelier, dating to the 1960s and designed in the glamorous Hollywood Regency tradition. Handcrafted in Italy, the chandelier combines an elaborate framework of gilt metal scrolling branches, leaves and stems with an abundance of hand-painted ivory-white lily flowers. The floral elements radiate organically from the center, creating a light, exuberant composition that is decorative from every angle. Four gracefully curved gilt-metal arms extend from the central body, each terminating in a candle-form socket surrounded by sculptural golden leaves. The sweeping arms and curling tendrils give the chandelier a particularly elegant silhouette, while the contrasting ivory flowers soften the gilt surface and create the distinctive botanical character of the fixture. The central structure rises vertically in a bouquet-like arrangement of gilt leaves and stems surrounded by numerous white-painted lilies. Additional flowers cascade through and around the arms, producing the appearance of an elaborate Italian floral bouquet suspended from the ceiling. The chandelier reflects the decorative vocabulary associated with Italian Hollywood Regency lighting and the floral metalwork popularized by designers and ateliers such as Maison Baguès, combining botanical naturalism with the theatrical elegance of mid-20th-century interiors. This example is appropriately described as in the style of Maison Baguès rather than attributed to the French maker. Importantly, the chandelier retains its original Made in Italy metal tag, confirming its Italian manufacture. Dating to circa the 1960s, the fixture has developed an appealing vintage character. The gilt finish displays subtle variations and age-related patination, while the hand-painted ivory-white flowers retain the slight irregularities that distinguish vintage hand-finished tolework from contemporary mass-produced lighting. The chandelier is fitted with four lights and has been newly rewired for use in the United States. The existing suspension chain can be shortened or adjusted before shipment to accommodate different ceiling heights. The chandelier body measures approximately 15 inches high to the upper loop × 19 inches wide × 19 inches deep, excluding the suspension chain and ceiling canopy. Its relatively compact proportions make it particularly versatile: substantial enough to create a decorative focal point without requiring the scale of a large formal chandelier. It would be particularly beautiful in a bedroom, dressing room, powder room, intimate dining area, entry hall or feminine sitting room, where its sculptural lilies can be appreciated at close range. It also works beautifully as a romantic counterpoint within a cleaner contemporary interior. The combination of aged gold, creamy ivory and sculptural botanical forms works particularly well with plaster walls, silk, velvet, lacquer, marble and contemporary neutral furnishings.
