About the Item

Beautiful and meaningful, Gothic church relic from the late 1800s. This stunning and all handcrafted five-light chandelier from the 1870s is designed in the shape of an advent wreath and it was originally made to be a gas-light. What makes this specific Gothic chandelier extra special is the text in stylized Gothic letters all around the body of this chandelier. It reads: "INVIOLATA, INTEGRA, ET CASTA ES MARIA, QUAE ES EFFECTA FULGIDA CAELI PORTA" which translates to "INVIOLATE, SPOTLESS AND PURE ART THOU, Oh MARY WHO WAST MADE THE RADIANT GATE OF HEAVEN". Inviolata est Maria, according to the internet, is an 11th century hymn and prayer and later Josquin des Prez composed a motet under the same name, which became his most famous work. When we first saw this work of religious (lighting) art last week, we directly searched the internet and we could not find another one anywhere in the world. So apart from beautiful in design, religiously meaningful and wonderful to look at, that made us realize that this antique also is extremely rare. The look and feel, also because of the combination of the red colored lettering and solid brass base, is truly remarkable and the Gothic-shape, bronze 'canopy' is like the crown on top. This large and high Gothic chandelier comes with five torch-design candle holders making it look beautiful in the daytime, but with the candles burning in the evening, the warm light of the candles shining onto the brass creates a spiritual atmosphere that is truly remarkable and it will never fail to impress.
