About the Item

18th century, Pair of Italian Neoclassical Giltwood Floor Candelabra This outstanding pair of large pyramidal candelabra in finely carved and gilded wood was produced in Northern Italy towards the end of the 18th century, during the Neoclassical period. The structure is entirely executed in carved and gilded wood, set on a triangular pyramidal base: this ingenious solution visually lightens the volume and allows the base to almost “disappear” when viewed three-quarter, making these pyramids particularly suitable for placement in corners, architectural niches, or wall recesses. The lower section expands into a molded shelf with a palmette frieze recalling the Neoclassical decorative vocabulary, resting on a rectangular plinth. The vertical body develops as an elaborate openwork composition, animated by a rich interweaving of volutes, scrolling foliage, and vegetal motifs. On the sides rise large, vigorously carved acanthus leaves with pronounced veins and undulating edges, curling into enveloping volutes that create a natural frame around the central element. The interplay of volutes, leaves, and flowers lightens the alternation of solids and voids, generating a refined decorative rhythm. At the center of each pyramid stands an elegant classical vase, with a slender rim, set on a turned foot and enriched with ribbons and floral garlands. The vase is crowned by a bouquet of carved flowers that serves as the visual focal point. Flowing ribbons at the top intertwine with the volutes, enhancing the Neoclassical elegance of the design. The upper section opens into a fan-like arrangement of symmetrical volutes and acanthus leaves terminating in seven candle arms arranged on different levels, with a gently curved profile, fitted with removable turned and gilded wooden bobeches. At the back, lacquered, two wooden handles facilitate handling. Each pyramid features seven lights, currently configured as candleholders but easily convertible into lamps, with the possibility of adding lampshades to soften the light and emphasize their theatrical quality. Their slender verticality, richness of carving, and imposing height make them ideal as true torchères for salons, studies, or grand entrances. The overall effect is that of two luminous and graceful sculptural forms of great visual impact, capable of dialoguing both with classical interiors and contemporary settings, where the pyramidal design and refined silhouette become key elements. Thanks to the triangular base and vertical development, the pyramids can be placed against a wall, in front of paneling, or in a corner, presenting the pair not only as an important furnishing element but also as a significant document of Italian Neoclassical visual culture. A conservative restoration will be carried out shortly.
