About the Item

There is something wonderfully architectural about this small French Art Deco lantern. Rather than relying on elaborate metalwork, its entire character comes from the striking contrast between a sharply defined black metal framework and four exceptionally substantial molded glass panels. Made in France circa the 1930s, the lantern has the shape of a miniature architectural pavilion. Its square body gently widens toward the top and is finished with an unusually attractive overhanging roof with a softly rippled edge. Seen from below or from an angle, this almost pagoda-like silhouette gives the fixture much more presence than its modest dimensions would suggest. The real stars, however, are the four thick clear glass panels. Each one is deeply molded in relief with a wonderfully symmetrical Art Deco design of rising stems and curling scrolls, somewhere between a stylized fountain, a sheaf and a classical palmette. Against the finely textured background of the glass, these polished raised elements catch the light beautifully. With the light switched off, the clear sculptural glass and black framework create a particularly graphic and almost monochrome appearance. Once illuminated, the transformation is quite remarkable. The heavy glass begins to glow in warm shades of amber and gold, while the raised decoration becomes considerably more pronounced. Because the same glass panel is repeated on all four sides, the lantern looks equally attractive from every direction. Its relatively compact lantern body also makes this antique fixture especially versatile. We can see it working beautifully in an entrance hall or vestibule, but also in a hallway, entryways, stairwell, powder room, dressing area or as an atmospheric pendant above a small table. For an interior designer looking for an authentic period light that is decorative without becoming overly ornate, this could be a particularly rewarding piece. The lantern body itself measures only approximately 10 inches high, while the four heavy glass panels give it the visual substance of a considerably larger fixture. The blackened metal frame, original-style chain and wonderfully shaped ceiling canopy form a very harmonious whole and the age-related surface wear only adds to its authentic character. The four molded glass panels are in very good antique condition. The height can of course be shortened by removing links from the chain, making this lantern suitable for both higher and more moderately proportioned ceilings. Prior to shipping, this antique French fixture will be professionally checked and wired to the highest standard for safe and immediate use in the United States. It can be fitted for a regular American E26 screw-thread bulb, also suitable for LED and dimmer use. This stylish and increasingly difficult to find French Art Deco lantern will be professionally packed for safe transport. Our favourable price includes professional packing and FREE shipping from our store to your door in the US in just 4 to 5 workdays.
