About the Item

Very rare collection of 6 unique wall mounted porcelain masks mounted in fer forge frames, all signed M. Bever Paris, Made in France, circa 1925. The iron frames are stamped 'France' and were made to be electrified and illuminated with a single candelabra size lightbulb, causing the porcelain faces to be illuminated from behind. Note that on two of the faces (the middle of top and bottom row of main image) the porcelain is perforated. Edgar Brandt is known to have designed wrought iron for Maison Robj, for whom Marcel Bever designed many ceramics. Marcel Bever was a ceramicist who created decorative objects and bibelots for Robj and Aladin Paris in the 1920s and 1930s. He was also a friend of Corbusier. (There is a watercolor of a man and woman in an interior by Corbusier dated 1949 and dedicated to Marcel Bever). He also did many set designs for theatre. A truly remarkable collection of Art deco era art. Fitting art work that embodies Marcel Bevers love for Theatre. I believe the masks are representations of the 9 muses of ancient Greek mythology. The set consists of 6 masks but I have seen 2 more different masks. Each Muse represent various forms of art and knowledge. The most well known muses are Melpomene (Tragedy) and Thalia (comedy). The faun mask (human/goat) represents Comedy and the virgin or Thalia mask represents Tragedy. Largest collection of his mask sconces known. A great strong set for an art deco collection. Provenance: from the private collection of Mark Feldman and Corey Warn of Antiquers III in Boston, MA, who were notable dealers in French Art Deco. Signée M. BÉVER Paris et marquée Made in France Dimensions shown are for the male devil mask. Dimensions vary per mask.
