About the Item

Foliage glazed stoneware sconce by Magali Wagner. Artist’s signature under the base. 2026. H : 14.2 x 17.1 x 5.5 inches. - Magali Wagner was born in 1980 in the Hautes-Alpes region. To this day, she remains deeply shaped by the harsh landscapes of her childhood. Magali Wagner is first and foremost a potter. She throws and hand-builds stoneware vessels — bowls, cups, pitchers, and plates — some of which, enriched with sculpted additions, create a direct link to her sculptural practice, which has become increasingly central in her work. Through her approach to the potter’s gesture, she evokes a deep attachment to vernacular forms and everyday objects, nourished by childhood memories: milk pots, pitchers, and familiar ceramics seen at her grandmother’s home. This sensitive memory permeates her entire practice. In parallel, her sculptural work unfolds a universe that is at once discreet, mysterious, and delicate, drawing on an intimate relationship with nature, a wild nature that serves as both refuge and source of imagination. Particular attention is given to the domestic space in which her pieces are placed, likely influenced by a sensibility shaped by her father, an architect. Her interest in objects, landscapes, and encounters forms a fertile ground from which she draws freely, without premeditated intention, allowing a plastic language to emerge that speaks of the invisible, the sensitive, and a kind of wild interiority. She works with high-fire clays and develops her own traditional glazes, shino, celadon, tenmoku, ash and earth glazes — in an approach that is both ecological and in dialogue with the history of pottery. Firings, carried out in gas or wood kilns, involve flame as an essential element, revealing the full richness and subtlety of her surfaces.
