About the Item

19th century French Empire revival mirror sconce with beveled glass. Walnut frame decorated with gilt bronze ormolu mounts with a pair of swans drinking from a fountain below, the crest with Eros in his chariot holding a bow and arrow being pulled by swans. Two swivel candle holder arms in front of the beveled glass mirror are adjustable. A beautifully crafted piece of neoclassical inspired decorative art. Showing true craftsmanship, even the entire back is covered in brass. 20 inches high 11.5 wide 3.5 deep at the candle arms. The Empire Revival style, a grand echo of Napoleon-era aesthetics, emerged in the mid-to-late 19th century as a return to the power, pageantry, and classical symbolism of the early 1800s. Inspired by the French Empire style—which came to fruition during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte—this revival brought back neoclassical elements, heroic ornamentation, mythical references and architectural design. The original Empire style flourished in early 19th-century France and spread across Europe and America. It was known for symmetrical forms, Classical Roman and Egyptian motifs and luxurious materials such as mahogany, rosewood walnut with ormolu (gilt bronze) mounts and decorations. This piece is a prime example.
