About the Item

A large and impressive scissor wall lamp by Curt Fischer for Midgard, Germany, 1940s. It features a long scissor construction holding an enamel metal shade that can be adjusted in most directions. The original lamp holder is made from brass and porcelain with an integrated light switch. It bears the Midgard hallmark and the DRGM patent mark. The length of the lamp is adjustable between 48 - 120 cm, diameter of the shade 13 cm. The engineer Curt Fischer took over the engine works Industriwerk Auma in Thuringia, Germany, in 1919. As an inventor, Fischer was eager to develop an electric fixture suitable for workshops and factories. Soon, the scissor lamp was launched, followed by other adjustable fixtures that revolutionized the idea of industrial lighting. The hallmark of the Midgard range of lamps depicts a snake, symbolizing the flexibility of his groundbreaking fixtures. When Fischer passed away in 1956, his son Wolfgang took over the company until it was expropriated by the Eastern German state.
