About the Item

Pair of Diminutive Napoleonic Neoclassical Bronze Wall Sconces with Swan Motif, Attributed to P.E. Guerin, Rewired a rare opportunity to acquire highly decorative, classically inspired sconces with exceptional detail in a versatile scale. Elegant and finely detailed, Offered as pairs—a rare opportunity to acquire highly decorative, classically inspired sconces with exceptional detail in a versatile scale. These bronze wall sconces is attributed to the esteemed New York foundry P.E. Guerin, one of America's oldest decorative hardware firms, active since 1857. Likely dating to the mid 20th century, each sconce reflects the firm's signature quality and classical inspiration. Diminutive in scale—measuring just 10 inches high x 4.5 inches deep x 3.5 inches wide—these sconces are ideal for a powder room, vestibule, or intimate alcove where finely cast architectural lighting makes a grand statement in a small space. Each sconce features a richly ornamented candle cup adorned with anthemion and palmette motifs, flanked by sculptural swans—symbols closely tied to Napoleonic iconography. The central column bears a five-point star and stylized ring handles, resting on a radiant foliate backplate and finished with a scrolling acanthus drop. Fitted with faux wax candle sleeves and rewired for candelabra bulbs, these sconces are ready for modern installation. A superb example of classically inspired American bronze work, echoing the imperial elegance of the French Empire. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Rewired and ready to install. Original patina to reverse. Dimensions: 10" H x 4.5" D x 3.5" W Supporting Points for Attribution to P.E. Guerin: Ornate casting with high-relief foliate, anthemion, and symbolic motifs (e.g., stars and swans) is consistent with Guerin’s work. Swan motifs and classical references were often used by Guerin, who frequently drew from French Empire and Rococo Revival influences. The back construction, including the single-piece backplate and wiring channels, also aligns with Guerin fixtures from the early electrified era. Guerin was known for both small-scale and monumental bronze lighting and often produced pieces for upscale interiors where “small but powerful” architectural detail was prized (e.g., powder rooms, dressing rooms, or mirrored niches). While these sconces are unmarked, Guerin pieces were not always signed, especially earlier works or bespoke orders.
