About the Item

This exceptional pair of Model 2030/31 wall lights was designed by Rolf Krüger and Dieter Witte for the German lighting manufacturer Staff. The design dates from the 1960s and embodies in a particularly successful way the combination of functional lighting design and the clear, sculptural formal language of German Mid-Century design. The pair offered here is in excellent condition. The dark brown metal covers and the white lacquered reflectors are very well maintained and emphasize the clean contours of the design. The lamps show hardly any signs of wear and are in an almost new condition. Both luminaires have the original Staff label with the model designation 2030/31, clearly documenting their origin. Characteristic of the model is its consistently reduced construction of bent metal. A white lacquered base body is surrounded by a dark brown, slightly curved metal shade. The front-extended cover completely conceals the light source, thereby preventing direct glare. At the same time, the light is reflected off the white interior and emitted both upwards and downwards. This creates a pleasantly indirect yet architecturally effective illumination. Precisely this interplay of shielding and reflection is one of the special design qualities of Model 2030/31. Staff Leuchten was one of the important German manufacturers of modern lighting, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s. The company collaborated with numerous renowned designers; in addition to Rolf Krüger and Dieter Witte, historical programs include designs by Motoko Ishii and later Kazuo Motozawa. The experimental use of metal, glass, and new lighting concepts made Staff a characteristic representative of progressive German lighting design of this era.
