About the Item

An elegant and exceptionally rare pair of wall sconces attributed to Jacques Adnet, created during the 1960s and exemplary of the designer's ability to reconcile architectural rigor with refined decorative sophistication. Their composition reflects Adnet's signature language: restrained geometry, noble materials, and an extraordinary attention to proportion and detail. The design is built around a striking vertical framework composed of black lacquered steel and naturally patinated brass, whose warm aged finish provides a refined contrast to the darker structure. Rather than concealing the construction, the mounting system becomes an integral part of the aesthetic, emphasizing the precision and honesty of the design. The large gently curved diffusers are crafted from molded pressed glass with a finely textured grid pattern. Their softly convex profile lightens the visual weight of the fixture while creating a subtle interplay of reflections across the surface. Once illuminated, the textured glass beautifully diffuses the light, producing a warm, comfortable glow while preserving the graphic clarity of the surrounding metal framework. One of the most remarkable features is the sophisticated fastening system. Each diffuser is secured by finely engineered brass locking caps and elegant folded steel brackets, allowing the glass to be firmly held while remaining fully removable for maintenance. The exposed square brass loops at the upper and lower ends—both structural and decorative—reinforce the architectural identity of the design and testify to the remarkable quality of French metalworking of the period. Viewed from every angle, the sconces reveal a carefully balanced dialogue between transparency and solidity, industrial precision and decorative refinement. The aged brass has developed a rich natural patina over time, adding depth and character that only decades of careful preservation can produce. With their generous scale and sculptural presence, these wall lights are equally suited to sophisticated residential interiors, boutique hospitality projects, or collectors seeking important examples of French mid-century lighting. As with all vintage lighting, we recommend professional inspection and rewiring if required for safe operation and compliance with contemporary local electrical standards.
