About the Item

A Rare French Midcentury Modern hand stitched leather table lamp by Jacques Adnet, circa 1955. Adnet had a rare talent for creating works that had used exquisite form and lines with rich materials. The entire composition is subtly balanced with muted red leather and black metal. . In all, it creates the perfect balance between the Modern and the Neoclassical. Jacques Adnet Jacques Adnet was a renowned 20th-century French designer associated with the Art Deco and Modernist movements. A student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he worked with his brother Jean Adnet, a fellow professional, creating furniture and objets d'art under a joint signature from 1922 to 1928. At the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts, the Adnet brothers had their own stand where they presented furniture in which Jacques used, in addition to traditional materials, metal and glass—materials he would increasingly favor over time. It was his simple yet elegant Art Deco furniture that captivated his clientele, so much so that in 1928, Louis Süe and André Mare entrusted him with the management of the Compagnie des Arts Français, which he led until 1959. In 1937, he was awarded the Grand Prize for Architecture and Furniture Design at the Universal Exhibition for the Saint-Gobain glass pavilion. In 1959, he became director of the Fine Arts of Paris, crowned with international success which earned him the honor of decorating for the Presidency at the Château de Rambouillet.
