About the Item

Fat lava ceramic table lamp produced by Walter Gerhards for Herda, West Germany, in the 1960s. The bulbous ceramic body measures 11 x 8 x 20 inches and is covered in a deep matte brown ground glaze with a bold swirling relief element finished in vivid orange and amber. The relief incorporates a circular cutout opening, and the lamp is fitted with both a standard bulb socket and an internal bulb that illuminates the swirl from within. Shade is a newer white linen cylinder. West German fat lava ceramics emerged in the postwar period as manufacturers like Herda developed heavily textured, layered glaze techniques that produced organic, volcanic surface effects. The bold color palette and expressive relief work here are characteristic of Herda's production output during the 1960s, when sculptural ceramic lamps were a significant part of the West German decorative arts market. The dual-illumination feature, which lights both through the shade and through the cutout relief, reflects the period's interest in ceramic forms as active light sources rather than simple bases. Shows minor wear consistent with age and use.
