About the Item

Art Deco lamp, circa 1930. Solid wrought-iron base stamped FAG (Ferronnerie Artisanale des Galeries). Acid-etched white glass shade with leaf decoration, signed "Lorrain." Verrerie Belle Étoile (a Daum sub-brand). Electrified, E14 socket. In perfect condition. Total height: 40 cm Base diameter: 11.8 cm Shade diameter: 20 cm Shade height: 19.5 cm Total weight: 5.5 kg The "Verrerie Belle Étoile" manufactory was established on December 15, 1925, by Antonin Daum to sell items at competitive prices that differed from those produced at the Nancy factory. To emphasize this distinction, production took place not in Nancy but in Croismare (near Lunéville), under the direction of Paul Daum. Starting in 1927, the glassworks adopted mechanized processes to produce blown-pressed and molded-pressed glass pieces signed "Lorrain." Between 1928 and 1934, Pierre d’Avesn created innovative designs for the factory, signed "Lorrain" and "Davesn/Lorrain." Pierre Bergé also contributed to production at Verrerie Belle Étoile, creating items—such as vases, bowls, ashtrays, bottles, and lighting fixtures—often featuring molded decorations and sometimes wrought-iron mounts; however, these did not match the quality of the Daum Nancy pieces designed in collaboration with Majorelle. The economic crisis of the 1930s impacted Verrerie Belle Étoile, leading to its permanent closure on December 16, 1934. Some of the 120 workers were transferred to the Nancy facility. Products bear the "Lorrain" signature, which appears either molded in relief, engraved with a point, or painted in enamel. The signature "Val" appears engraved or painted. The signature "P D’Avesn/France/Lorrain" is molded in relief. Through the Verrerie d’Art Lorrain in Croismare, the factory supplied the firm VAL/E. VAL & Cie (1890–1940)—formerly Maison Effler (d’Argyl)—which signed its pieces "VAL." These were extravagant designs. The "d’Argyl" trademark was registered by E. VAL & Cie in 1928. The pieces were manufactured by the Verrerie d’Art Lorrain (also known as Verrerie de la Belle Étoile), located in Croismare and managed by Paul Daum. The "d’Argyl" signature was also used on artistic objects distributed by E. VAL & Cie until 1940. The signatures include: "Lorrain," "LORRAIN," "Lorrain France," "Lorrain Nancy France," "LORRAIN NANCY-FRANCE," "LORRAIN NANCY FRANCE," "Croix de Lorraine Lorrain," "VERRERIES D’ART LORRAIN ECLAIRAGE OBJETS D’ART VERRERIE DE BELLE ETOILE," "VAL," "Val" or "P D’AVESN FRANCE Lorrain," "Lysiés," and "D’ARGYL."
