About the Item

This exquisite thistle (Le Chardon) lamp by Daum Freres and Maurice Bouval depicts an asymmetrical thistle sprig, with one bud closed and the other in bloom, the flower rendered in a pâte de verre shade of blue, pink, and green with finely articulated striations. Each bract undulates and curves gently upward, while the stem is enlivened with spiny bumps and vertical ridges. The foot is formed from the sweeping contours of thistle leaves that wrap around the fork of the stem. The bronze is finished with a richly toned verdigris, adding a sense of organic realism to the composition. Item #: YEL-22177 Artist: Daum, Bouval Country: France Circa: 1900 Dimensions: 21.5" height, 7.5" width, 5.75" depth. Materials: Glass, Bronze Signed: “M. Bouval” Literature: Pictured in: Art Nouveau and Art Deco Lighting by Alastair Duncan, Thames and Hudson, Ltd., London, 1978, page 133, plate #32. Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: This spectacular lamp was the combined effort of two of the most renowned Art Nouveau period artists who lent the work a startling degree of naturalism and sophistication. The bronze stem base is simultaneously the functional support for the glass shade and a sculpture in its own right, emphasizing its asymetrical, movemented form with an additonal bronze thistle complementing the glass one. The Daum shade sensitively renders the subtle gradations of color in earthy, pastel tones.
