About the Item

The attenuated silhouette of this late 19th century bronze table lamp turns heads. It is an antique Asian archaic style bronze. The intricate carving and the oxidized bronze color speak to age and quality. It is similar to the mid-century lamps produced 100 years later, but apart, older than those mid-20th century pieces. This is from the fourth quarter of the 19th century--the Meiji era. It began around 1869 and ended in 1912. Pieces produced during the Meiji period represent a time when Japan was emerging from 300 years of isolation according to scholars.. Japanese craftspersons began to share their work with the outside world, not just with China. It would be the first time Japan sold goods in Western markets. This lamp is of square section and tapered in the middle. The body centers a swelled element with engraved stylized motifs and protruding nodules, on a stepped square base. It is electric and has been expertly rewired and made ready for use once more. It is 44 inches tall, and the base is 6 inches by 6 inches.

Rewired: This is statement lighting. There is a condition issue with the area described that is about two inches wide--loss to the finish. This lamp has been professionally rewired and is ready for use. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. This lamp is from the 1870s or later in the 19th century. It is the predecessor of lamps that appear similar, but were produced in the mid 20th century. It is ready for installation. There is the condition issue of the loss to the top mount.
