About the Item

Brutalist stoneware table lamp base by the renowned British ceramicist Bernard Rooke (born 1938). Rooke is a celebrated figure in the Mid Century Modern and Brutalist movements. His work is characterized by organic, hand modeled forms that often resemble totems or ancient artifacts. The lamp is crafted from stoneware, often utilizing a combination of hand-building techniques like coiling and block forming. This specific design features earthy terracotta tones accented by a distinctive blue/green glaze. The abstract motifs including the circular sun like patterns and horizontal ridges are typical of his sculptural language, which was often inspired by the Suffolk landscape. Production: Rooke began making these sculptural bases in the 1960s at his workshop in Forest Hill and later in Suffolk. Early examples like this one were hand-fashioned, while later pieces in his career transitioned to being mold-formed.  H: 55cm W: 18cm
