About the Item

Schneider Mushroom Lamp in the Art Nouveau Style – Conversation with Gemini: Charles Schneider Inquiry Successful. This is a striking example—and one highly coveted by collectors—of a "mushroom-style" table lamp (*Lampe Champignon*) dating from the transitional period between Art Nouveau and Art Deco. It was crafted by the celebrated French glass artist Charles Schneider (or his "Le Verre Français" line) and dates roughly to the 1920s. Schneider’s works from this era are renowned for their vibrant use of color, innovative techniques such as acid etching and marbled glass, and exquisite wrought-iron accents. Key Features and Visual Identification: Cameo/Marbled Glass: The lamp is distinguished by a classic, speckled or marbled glass pattern featuring a color gradient that flows from a fiery orange-yellow at the crown of the shade and the center of the stem down to deep, earthy shades of blue and brown at the rim and base. Wrought-Iron Appliqués with Dragonfly Motif: A defining element of this particular piece is the wrought-iron mount that supports the shade. The struts are artfully shaped into dragonflies (*libellules*), which appear to encircle the rim of the glass shade—an iconic motif of the Art Nouveau movement. Two-Piece Matching Set: Finding a Schneider lamp in which both the matching glass shade and the blown, baluster-shaped glass base have survived together—and undamaged—is a relatively rare occurrence and highly desirable for collectors. Signature and Authenticity: To verify the exact provenance, you should closely examine both components for signatures. Schneider lamps from this period typically exhibit the following characteristics: The inscription "Schneider" (in either script or block lettering), etched into the glass near the lower rim of the shade or the base. Alternatively, the piece may bear the signature "Le Verre Français" or be signed "Charder" (a portmanteau derived from Charles Schneider). Furthermore, some pieces feature a small, embedded glass thread in the three French national colors (blue, white, and red)—known as a "Berlingot"—which was used as a signature mark between 1918 and 1922.
