About the Item

Claudio Salocchi for Lumenform, 'Tulpa' lamp, marble, steel, chrome-plated steel, methacrylate, Italy, 1971 Designed in 1971 by the Italian architect and industrial designer Claudio Salocchi (1934-2012) for Lumenform, the Tulpa lamp represents a paradigmatic example of the experimental and conceptual tendencies that characterized Italian lighting design in the early 1970s. Conceived at the intersection of geometry, material contrast, and perceptual experimentation, the object transcends its functional role as a lighting fixture to become a luminous sculpture. The design explores how light can articulate space, structure, and meaning. Formally, Tulpa is composed of three distinct material components that define its architectural syntax. The base, a solid block of white marble, provides mass, stability, and a counterweight to the ethereal upper section. From this base rises a delicate steel frame, constructed with precise linear geometries that trace a cube within a cube, creating the impression of a wireframe volume suspended in space. Within this metallic lattice, a sheet of transparent methacrylate is inserted, acting as both a diffuser and a mediator between material and light. When illuminated, the internal light source projects upward, transforming the steel edges into radiant outlines and animating the methacrylate with subtle reflections and refractions. Within Claudio Salocchi’s broader oeuvre, Tulpa belongs to a fertile period of experimentation in lighting and furniture design. Trained at the Politecnico di Milano, Salocchi emerged in the 1960s as one of the key figures exploring the intersections between industrial production, spatial design, and new technologies. A member of the Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (ADI) from 1967, and later its vice-president, he developed a body of work characterized by structural clarity, functional innovation, and a constant search for new typologies. His collaborations with Lumenform yielded several notable projects, including Fluo, Onda, and Zea, all of which share with Tulpa a concern for modularity, transparency, and the articulation of light as an active material. Beyond lighting, Salocchi designed furniture systems such as Centro (1959) and Metrosistema (1979), the latter awarded the Compasso d’Oro for its innovative modular concept. Many of his works and projects received recognition and were showcased through selections or invitations at renowned exhibitions, events, and museums worldwide. Please note that there are signs of age and use visible on the methacrylate.
