About the Item

A handsome French bronze parlor table lamp dating to the mid-19th century, distinguished by its richly modelled form and elegant early Victorian decorative character. The sculptural bronze body displays an elaborate combination of scrolling and foliate ornament, giving the lamp a distinctly architectural presence. Its warm aged bronze surface has developed an attractive natural patina that enhances the relief decoration and contributes to the character expected of a piece of this age. Surmounted by a traditional domed shade, the lamp has a balanced, classically proportioned silhouette. The decorative treatment anticipates some of the flowing naturalistic forms that would become increasingly prominent in later Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau design. The lamp retains a switched B22 bayonet bulb holder and has been adapted for electric illumination. A decorative antique accent particularly suited to a library, drawing room, study, bedside or traditionally furnished interior.
