WoW! 1955 Porcelain & Fiberglass Mid Century Modern Atomic/Sputnik Table Lamp Original Fiberglass Shade Squiggle/Splatter Design Populuxe Styling! Dimensions: 31" tall by 15" wide This magnificent 1950s table lamp is an iconic example of the whimsical style that brought intense color, shapes and fun to interiors of the period! Mint green porcelain with a matching fiberglass shade! Squiggles and flourishes in gold and chrome! A 3-dimensional butterfly shaped anodized metal flourish for good measure! In the mid century period everyone knew that this postwar period was significant and would bring change in many things, including furnishings, but everyone also had competing ideas of what this mid century new style should look like! This style would later be called "googie" and tied into the architectural style of Morris Lapidus who designed the sumptuous Eden Roc hotel in Florida. In a glance, one should be able to see that it is a special object, rich and opulent with no restraint in styling! Restaurants, motels and the everyday homes throughout America would embrace this style and lamps like this one defined "popular luxury" which would later be defined as "Populuxe" styling. In the late 80s, people first started to realize these artifacts of the mid century had great emotional and physical value for their optimism and cultural innocence. Now, these items are more coveted than ever and people realize this era of American made opulence and fun will likely never come again and surviving furnishings are now valuable commodities. They open a window to the past and bring some of that glorious mid century optimism with them! This beautiful lamp is one of the nicest surviving examples of Populuxe style we have seen! In fine vintage condition, Age appropriate wear to lamp and original fiberglass shade. A design treasure for your NY penthouse, Palm Springs atomic ranch or West Palm Beach estate!
