About the Item

A pair of Dutch Art Deco table lamps in hand-painted Gouda pottery from Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland, dated 1926 and 1927, with oxblood red and yellow flowers on ivory with orange, teal, and black, all outlined in gold. New ivory pleated silk shades. Newly wired for U.S. use. International plug customization available at no charge. Height includes lampshade. Each base takes a full baluster form, the body painted with a bold stylized floral that wraps the whole circumference: oxblood red and yellow blooms on an ivory ground, with an orange-glazed shoulder above and a band of mottled teal foliage descending to a deep matte-black foot. Every element is outlined in fine gold, a cloisonné-like technique that gives the matte surface its graphic, jewel-like clarity. The two lamps are a rare matched pair, hand-painted and therefore individual in their smallest details. The matte glaze shows the fine crazing characteristic of Gouda pottery of the period and consistent with age. The underside of each is hand-painted with the Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland house mark (the Lazarus gate of Gouda), the pattern name "Lucette," the model number 1562, a painter's monogram, a year symbol — one base dated 1926, the other 1927 — and "Made in Holland." One base has a chip on the bottom rim which is barely visible. The bases are mounted as lamps with bespoke ivory pleated silk shades, brass fittings, and new fabric wrapped cords About Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland (PZH) Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland was founded in Gouda in 1898 by Adrianus Jonker and Egbert Estié, and grew into one of the most celebrated of the Dutch art potteries. Around 1909 it perfected the matte glaze technique that defined the Gouda look, and through the 1920s it paired that surface with the bold, stylized Art Deco abstract designs which are now highly collectable. Its export ware, marked "Made in Holland," sold widely in Britain and the United States under the name "Gouda ware." The factory received the Royal designation in 1930 and operated until the 1960s.
