Italian Brass Shell Form Table Lamp by Angelo Brotto for Esperia, Circa 1970 A sculptural Italian modern brass table lamp designed by Angelo Brotto for Esperia, Italy, circa 1970. Inspired by the organic form of an opening shell or clam, the lamp is composed of two overlapping brass elements that gently unfold around a concealed central light source, creating a warm and atmospheric illumination. The layered construction gives the piece an almost celestial quality — reminiscent of planetary forms or folded metallic petals — whilst remaining firmly rooted in the refined sculptural language of Italian lighting design from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Elegant yet quietly dramatic, it functions as both illumination and object. Angelo Brotto is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in post-war Italian lighting design. Best known for his longstanding collaboration with Esperia, Brotto created highly architectural lighting that balanced sculpture, materiality and function. His work frequently explored layered forms, reflective metals and softly diffused light, producing pieces that feel distinctly Italian in their glamour and restraint. Founded in Italy during the post-war period, Esperia became renowned for producing sophisticated decorative lighting, often working with notable designers and embracing luxurious materials including brass, polished metals and Murano glass. Today, Esperia lighting is increasingly sought after by collectors of Italian modern and Space Age design. This example retains a richly aged brass surface with attractive patina throughout, adding depth and authenticity to the piece. There are age-related scratches, marks and oxidation consistent with its history and use, all of which we feel contribute positively to its character. A highly decorative lamp, ideal for a console, side table or bedroom setting, particularly suited to interiors incorporating Italian modern, Mid-Century Modern, Hollywood Regency or layered contemporary design. Condition: Good vintage condition with age-related wear, scratches and patina to the brass surface, commensurate with age and use. In working order.
