Large Pair Sculptural Modernist Pencil Reed Scroll Lamps, 1980s United States, circa 1980s This striking pair of sculptural pencil reed lamps exemplifies the late-20th-century intersection of modernist form, material experimentation, and organic design. Composed of tightly layered pencil reed formed into sweeping scrolls and cylindrical volutes, each lamp reads as an abstract object first and a functional lighting form second—firmly aligning them with modern design rather than traditional decorative lighting. The composition is defined by bold curves, repetition, and rhythm. Continuous horizontal striations emphasize movement and structure, while the opposing scrolls create a dynamic sense of balance and symmetry.
