About the Item

A pair of architectural table lamps. Lamp foots in wood, probably teak. Designed by Uno Kristiansson, for Luxus, Sweden, 1970s. Both retain their original labels: made in Sweden - Luxus Vittsjö - Design Uno & Östen Kristiansson. For E26/27 bulbs. Work on 110v and on 220v. EU plug can be replaced by US plug for free if desired. New lampshades. Dimensions: diameter 13.78" / 10" (35cm / 25cm), height 10.2" (26cm). Swedish designers Uno & Östen Kristiansson, renowned for their lighting and mirror creations, left an indelible mark on the design world from the 1950s to the 1970s. Their distinctive Scandinavian modern style remains highly sought-after in vintage circles. Uno, born in 1925, and Östen, two years later in 1927, likely honed their craft in southern Sweden under the tutelage of their father, who operated Vittsjö Furniture, a business established in 1919. In 1950, Uno founded Luxus in Vittsjö, producing a diverse array of home products, including lamps, furniture, and mirrors, all designed by the brothers. Their collections gained acclaim nationally and internationally, with Luxus introducing a vibrant range of lamps in the 1960s, attributed to Finnish artist Marjatta Metsovaara. Östen presumably took over the family business in 1966, renaming it Östen Kristiansson AB. Though details on its operations are sparse, it likely continued the tradition of craftsmanship. Teak was a favored material for the Kristianssons, though they explored glass, leather, plastic, and acrylic in their designs. Notable creations include the Plafo Ceiling Lamp, UFO Lamp, Model 204 Hunting Chair, and minimalist mirrors reminiscent of Jacques Adnet’s Circulaire Mirror. In the 1970s, Luxus shifted focus to lighting for public spaces, featuring acrylic models with subtle wood accents. While several lamp models from this era are documented, their authenticity is under scrutiny. Östen passed away in 2003, leaving behind a legacy of timeless design cherished by enthusiasts seeking minimalist Scandinavian elegance for their homes.
