About the Item

This very good pair of lamps by famed designer James Mont are in a creamy tan dripping crackalure glazed finish simulating celadon porcelain representing his almost signature modern twist on Orientalism. The vases are Chinese in form but have been decorated with Han figures at the corners in dramatic poses and period costumes. Tall and slender they retain the original shade housing to hold the shade in place and can give intense uplight from a large bulb spot or from the two regular based sockets providing light for around a room in a more natural light of both if desired simultaneously. The architecture of the period emphasized broad rooms with tall, often visually interesting ceilings requiring lighting to add drama with large shades and visual effects. The vases can be rewired to modern material but we have chosen to leave the original material to be clear of the lamps age and origins. James Mont was best known for his extravagant hip and cool interiors for gangsters, show business people and stylish trendsetters. He would design every aspect of a room's interior and thereby able to create very important associations with furniture and accessories manufacturers allowing his work to reach a very broad base and creating a signature look for homes of distinction from the 1940s-early 1960s.
