About the Item

In the history of Swedish lighting, attention often falls on the great Stockholm manufacturers. Yet in Malmö, another important tradition of metalwork and lighting flourished during the first half of the twentieth century. Malmö Metallvarufabrik belonged to this world, producing decorative lighting in which craftsmanship, sculpture and the emerging language of Swedish modernism came together. This remarkable table lamp is model No. 4014, documented in Malmö Metallvarufabrik’s 1939 catalogue, page 57. The catalogue illustrates the model in green-oxidized cast bronze, originally priced at 47 Swedish kronor. The present example, however, is executed in brass, making it a particularly interesting variation of the documented model. A slender female figure rises from the sculpted base, holding a broad circular shade above her head. The classical human form contrasts beautifully with the strong geometry of the shade — a dialogue between antiquity and modernity that lies at the heart of Swedish Grace. More than eighty years later, the survival of model 4014 together with its original catalogue documentation allows us to place the design precisely within Swedish design history. It is more than a decorative table lamp: it is sculpture, lighting and architecture in miniature — and a fascinating reminder of the manufacturers and craftsmen beyond the famous names who helped shape Sweden’s remarkable lighting tradition.
