Svend Aage Holm-Sørensen, a Danish designer born in 1913, developed a body of work defined by constant evolution, deeply rooted in his training as an ornamental metalworker. This craftsmanship is especially evident in his lighting designs, which form the core of his legacy. In the 1950s, his luminaires featured vibrant colors and geometric compositions, often supported by refined structures such as the iconic tripod base. However, in the 1960s, his approach shifted dramatically toward a more radical and expressive language. He began emphasizing raw materials like unfinished brass and copper, allowing texture, patina, and material presence to take precedence over decorative elements. This transformation aligns with the influence of Brutalism, a movement associated with figures like Swedish architect Hans Asplund. In Holm-Sørensen’s work, this translated into lighting pieces with a sculptural, almost architectural quality—marked by austerity, rough surfaces, and an industrial sensibility. His luminaires moved beyond pure function, becoming expressive objects that celebrate rawness and structural honesty. Alongside lighting, he also designed furniture and smaller objects, driven by a spontaneous creative process—sketching ideas on everyday materials like envelopes or tram tickets. Even though not all his concepts were realized, Holm-Sørensen remains a key figure in Danish lighting design, with his lamps still highly sought after today.
