About the Item

Victorian Sheffield Plate Corinthian Column Lamp with Cut Crystal Font, Hinks & Sons Patent, Attributed to James Dixon & Sons or Elkington & Co., Victorian Sheffield Plate Corinthian Column Lamp with Cut Crystal Font, Hinks & Sons Patent, Attributed to James Dixon & Sons or Elkington & Co. This exceptional English lamp, dating to circa 1875, embodies the finest traditions of Victorian Sheffield craftsmanship. Newly rewired for modern use while preserving its historic character, it is ready to shade and place. The superb quality of the silver-plated standard suggests manufacture by one of Sheffield's premier firms, such as James Dixon & Sons or Elkington & Co., although no maker's mark for the plated standard has been found. The original Hinks & Sons Patent burner mount remains intact, firmly dating the lamp to the golden age of Victorian lighting. The architectural standard is modeled after the Corinthian Order, the most elaborate of the classical Greek architectural forms. Distinguished by its richly modeled acanthus-leaf capital, deeply fluted shaft, and monumental stepped plinth, the Corinthian column symbolized elegance, permanence, and classical learning. During the nineteenth-century Classical Revival, these forms were adapted from grand public architecture into luxury furnishings, transforming lamps such as this into miniature architectural monuments. The beautifully chased capital and crisply defined fluting demonstrate a level of casting and finishing associated with Sheffield's finest workshops. Suspended above the capital is a finely proportioned cut lead crystal font, brilliantly engraved with hobstars, cross-cut diamonds, and finely crosshatched panels beneath a band of elongated spear-point cutting. Originally designed to serve as the oil reservoir, the crystal remains the visual centerpiece of the lamp, catching and refracting light with remarkable brilliance while showcasing the exceptional cutting techniques of the late Victorian period. The lamp retains its original Hinks & Sons Patent burner collar. Founded in Birmingham in 1836, Hinks & Sons became internationally renowned for its patented duplex burner, introduced during the 1860s, which produced a brighter, cleaner, and more efficient flame than earlier designs. Hinks burners were fitted to many of the finest English lamps made by leading Sheffield silversmiths and manufacturers, making surviving examples with their original fittings especially desirable. The Sheffield plate exhibits an unusually deep, mirror-like finish that closely resembles solid sterling silver at first glance. Such richness of surface is characteristic of the highest-quality Victorian electroplated wares, where generous silver deposits and meticulous finishing techniques produced objects intended to rival their solid silver counterparts in both appearance and prestige Today the lamp has been professionally converted with a quality adjustable double-cluster socket assembly, allowing two bulbs beneath a single shade while preserving the appearance and proportions of the original oil lamp. Dimensions: 33 inches high to the top of the finial. 22 inches high to the top of the 7.5-inch diameter cut crystal font. 17 inches high to the top of the candlestick. 6.25-inch square base. Condition: Professionally rewired for modern electrical service and ready for immediate use. The Sheffield plate retains a bright, mirror-like finish with light, age-appropriate wear. The cut crystal font is in excellent condition with brilliant clarity. An outstanding example of late Victorian Classical Revival lighting, exhibiting the quality and craftsmanship associated with the finest Sheffield makers of the nineteenth century.
