S:t Eriks Lervarufabiker was a ceramics workshop and brickworks in Uppsala between 1888 and 1962. Household goods by Agda Österberg were produced for the Home Exhibition in 1917. In the 1920s and 1930s, artistic ceramics were produced. A number of famous artists worked at the factory during its heyday, including Sven Boberg, Edvin Ollers 1925–1927, Anna-Lisa Thomson, Märta Ankarswärd-Grönvall, Hildur Haggård, Gertrud Lönegren 1932–1936, Maggie Wibom 1935–1936 and Greta Runeborg-Tell 1935–1937. In 1937, the tile and ceramic factory was sold to Uppsala-Ekeby AB **S:t Eriks Lervarufabriker** was one of Sweden's most important ceramic and brick manufacturers during the first half of the twentieth century. Founded in Uppsala in 1907 as the successor to the earlier Upsala Nya Kakelfabrik (established in 1888), the company began by producing glazed tiled stoves before expanding into art pottery, household ceramics, architectural terracotta, and a wide range of building materials. A major expansion between 1908 and 1909 saw the construction of what became one of the most advanced brickworks in central Sweden. Equipped with a massive ring kiln and modern production technology under the direction of Danish brickmaking expert Anders V. Starup, the factory manufactured millions of bricks and roof tiles each year. Its products, including facing bricks, glazed roof tiles, and decorative architectural ceramic, were used in buildings throughout Sweden and helped define the appearance of Swedish architecture during the early twentieth century. Alongside its industrial production, S:t Eriks developed a reputation for high-quality ceramic design. The factory produced decorative pottery, household wares, and ornamental ceramics characterized by durable craftsmanship and restrained Scandinavian aesthetics. During the 1930s, however, the ceramic division was gradually discontinued as the company shifted its focus toward construction materials, while the pottery operations were transferred to Upsala-Ekeby. For decades, S:t Eriks remained the leading brick producer in the Uppsala region, manufacturing as many as three million roof tiles annually. Although brick production ended in 1962 after the local clay deposits were exhausted, the company's legacy continues through the many historic buildings constructed with its products. Surviving pieces of S:t Eriks pottery and architectural ceramics are now appreciated by collectors and historians alike as examples of Sweden's rich tradition of ceramic craftsmanship and industrial design.
