About the Item

This large wall mirror is an expressive example of Italian art nouveau, distinguished by its sculptural presence and highly organic vocabulary. The composition is defined by a tall rectangular mirror plate framed within a dynamic wooden structure, where vertical elements curve and branch with a fluid, almost botanical rhythm. The overall silhouette is animated yet balanced, conceived as both a functional object and a decorative architectural element. The frame is richly carved with sunflower motifs, a recurring symbol within the art nouveau language, prominently arranged along the crest and the vertical uprights. Each flower is rendered with deeply carved petals and textured centres, introducing a strong naturalistic character and a pronounced sense of depth. The wooden elements flow seamlessly into one another, with sinuous lines that emphasise verticality while softening the monumentality of the piece. Executed in beech, the mirror displays a warm tone and a lively grain that enhances the sculptural quality of the carving. The choice of material allows for precise detailing, evident in the crisp modelling of the floral motifs and the smooth transitions between convex and concave surfaces. The interplay between structure and ornament reflects the art nouveau ideal of unity between form, decoration, and craftsmanship. Produced in Italy in the 1920s, the mirror is attributed to Carlo Zen, whose work is associated with refined art nouveau interiors and a strong emphasis on decorative coherence and artisanal execution. The piece embodies the period’s approach to furniture as an integral element of the architectural and decorative environment. The mirror is in good condition and has been professionally restored and refinished by our internal atelier following a conservation-oriented approach. The wooden structure is solid and well preserved, with carved details remaining sharp and expressive, and the finish carefully refreshed to enhance the natural warmth of the beech while respecting its original surface. The original mirror plate has been intentionally retained and presents visible oxidations consistent with age; this choice was made to preserve the authenticity of the piece. Upon request, the mirror plate can be replaced. Minor traces of wear consistent with age and use are present and should be considered normal, contributing to the historical integrity of the mirror.
