About the Item

A carved and gilded mirror in the Second Empire style from the late 19th century, inspired by Neoclassicism Date: second half of the 19th century. A freestanding mirror, often placed above a fireplace or on a console table with a marble top. The upper part is embellished with an elaborate phytomorphic motif, featuring finely carved vine leaves and bunches of grapes, flanked by elegant volutes. The molding and frame feature a rounded arch shape with a twisted scroll pattern and beading along the inner edge. The lower corners feature acanthus scrolls and decorative volutes that connect the shaped edge to the base. It consists of carved wood with decorative plaster applied to the molded trim. The gold leaf gilding (with traces of the red/orange bolo ground showing through in areas of wear typical of the period) gives the frame an extraordinary, warm luminosity. The surface, which has a slight silver-white sheen from mercury/silver nitrate, shows the classic patina and slight oxidation consistent with its age. Excellent original patina; the presence of the original gilding lends the piece a high degree of antique charm compared to pieces that have been completely regilded with glitter.
