About the Item

A beautiful small size and rare mid century wood framed mirror in the shape of a flower or sunburst with a Toledo damascene metal bezel, made in Spain c. 1950. The Spanish Colonial style wooden frame is hand carved into a floral sunburst shape with petals ringing the outside of the mirror. The central bezel surrounding the mirror plate is of Toledo damascene parcel gilt metal with an engine turned pattern to the outer ring and silver foliate damascene details to the inner ring. Gold coloured studs to the inside of each of the indentations of the individual petals accompany the design. There are fixings for the piece to hang from a metal chain, along with a single fixing to the reverse. Toledo damascene is a centuries-old art form from Toledo, Spain that involves inlaying gold and silver into a black steel or copper base to create intricate designs, typically flowers, leaves, and architectural patterns. While the technique is named after the Syrian city of Damascus, it was established and refined in Toledo, where it was used for both decorative weapons and fine jewelry. The process involves cutting incisions into the base metal and hammering in threads of precious metal, a meticulous craft passed down through generations. The mirror has beautiful patina and a lovely contrast of the dark grained wood against the brilliant shine of the damascene interior bezel. There are some small marks on the mirror plate commensurate with age, but overall it is in lovely vintage condition.
