About the Item

In this listing you will find a charming and richly decorated Colonial Peruvian reverse-painted mirror dating from the 19th century. Executed in carved wood with hand-painted and gilded decoration, the mirror displays a beautifully naïve interpretation of Baroque ornament deeply rooted in the decorative traditions of Lima and the Spanish Colonial Andes. The shaped frame is adorned with vivid floral motifs, scrolling foliate decoration, heraldic birds, and symbolic flaming urns, all rendered in a lively folk palette of green, blue, ochre, black, and red over a white ground with gilt accents. Particularly striking are the confronting birds and devotional-style symmetry, characteristic of Peruvian Colonial decorative arts of the period. The surface retains extensive original craquelure, age-related wear, and beautifully oxidized patina throughout, all contributing to the mirror’s remarkable authenticity and warmth. The reverse-painted decoration shows natural paint shrinkage and historic surface fatigue consistent with genuine age. The mirror plate itself displays gentle aging and clouding appropriate to the piece. Both sculptural and intimate in scale, this mirror possesses the jewel-like quality often found in vernacular Colonial Latin American objects, balancing sophisticated symbolism with expressive hand craftsmanship.
