Black and brown glazed ceramic mirror by Mia Jensen. Artist signature under the base. Circa 2023-2024. H : 2.4’ x 20.9’ inches. - Born in 1981 in Denmark, lives and works in La Borne, France. Based in La Borne, a renowned center for contemporary ceramics, Mia Refslund Jensen shares her studio with artist David Whitehead. Her work moves between sculpture and utilitarian objects, combining expressive strength with technical rigor. A determined six-year apprenticeship gave her full autonomy in ceramic practice: three years refining wheel-throwing at the Bottani-Dechaud studio in La Borne, followed by three years at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. The wheel offers her great creative freedom, allowing her to explore both tableware and furniture — mirrors, tables, stools — made in stoneware with bold, contemporary colors. Alongside this, her sculptural work is rooted in an intimate relationship with the fragmented body. Powerful heads, legs in motion or crouched, embody postures of waiting, rest, or imbalance. Isolated, these bodily fragments sensitively convey the tension of being alive and the fragility of what keeps us standing.
