About the Item

Lapis Speculo is a limited-edition series of sculptural wall pieces exploring a universal language of geometry through the expressive qualities of coloured and silvered glass. Created by Giovanni Corrado for Baroncelli and first presented at Galleria Rossana Orlandi during Milan Design Week 2022, the works investigate how abstract forms can communicate identity, memory and emotion beyond language or culture. Each composition is assembled from individually cut panels of hand-silvered and aged coloured glass whose shimmering surfaces continuously respond to changing daylight and the movement of the viewer. Rather than presenting a fixed image, the work creates a contemplative landscape in which reflections gently ebb and flow throughout the day, revealing new relationships between colour, texture and light with every viewing. Lapis Speculo 05, 06 and 07 draw their inspiration from the Kabuto, the ceremonial helmets worn by Japanese warriors. Beyond their protective function, Kabuto helmets became highly personal expressions of identity, distinguished by individually crafted crests, symbolic ornaments and geometric silhouettes. These works reinterpret that visual language through abstraction, distilling the spirit of the Kabuto into carefully balanced compositions of intersecting forms rather than literal representation. Produced in a strictly limited edition of five, each Lapis Speculo transforms architectural surfaces through reflection, colour and changing light, occupying the space between contemporary art, collectible design and architectural sculpture. Each Lapis Speculo is handcrafted in Italy using individually cut panels of hand-silvered and aged coloured glass, assembled within a precision-made black matt lacquered frame. The silvering process is intentionally controlled to produce rich variations in tone, depth and texture, giving every panel its own distinctive character and ensuring that no two works are identical. The glass elements are carefully composed as a geometric puzzle, with every shape contributing to the overall visual balance while creating subtle layers of reflection and transparency. As ambient light changes throughout the day, the antiqued silvered surfaces continuously alter the appearance of the composition, producing an ever-changing dialogue between the artwork, its surroundings and the viewer. Every work is assembled and finished by hand in Baroncelli's Italian workshop and produced in a strictly limited edition of five, reinforcing its status as a collectible work of contemporary design.
