About the Item

A rare and highly sought-after wall mirror by Mithé Espelt, titled Cuzco #1, dating from the late 1960s. This early example represents one of the most distinctive and emblematic models from the artist’s workshop, characterized by its architectural composition and luminous use of crackled gold (kiln-fired). Crafted in embossed earthenware with "or au four", the piece features a structured, almost pre-Columbian-inspired frame composed of irregular geometric segments surrounding an oval mirror. The subtle variations in tone, surface crackle, and patina reflect the handmade nature of Espelt’s production, where each piece reveals slight and desirable differences. Measuring 32 × 27 cm, this mirror is a particularly rare early version, corresponding to the first iteration of the model, produced in limited quantities before a later variant entered broader distribution in the 1970s. As noted in the artist’s monograph "Le Luxe discret du quotidien", the model would later be edited in a modified form, making this example especially collectible. Both sculptural object and functional design piece, Cuzco #1 embodies Mithé Espelt’s unique ability to blur the boundaries between decorative arts and fine art. Its timeless aesthetic resonates strongly with contemporary interiors, making it equally suited for collectors of mid-century design, ceramic art, or rare French decorative objects.
